Individual Therapy

I have extensive experience in working with individuals who struggle with relationship issues, symptoms of depression or anxiety or who feel stuck and overwhelmed. Many of my clients have successful careers, but have difficulties navigating aspects of their personal lives.

I combine different techniques, depending on each client’s individual needs. I am happy to assist with a referral to a specialist, if needed. I believe that gaining insight about what causes emotional pain is important, but clients also benefit from learning concrete tools to help them navigate challenging emotional moments.

Pre-marital Counseling

It can be very helpful to gain a deep understanding of what makes a relationship last and successful before getting married. My twenty years of experience as a Gottman-strained couples therapist help me tailor pre-marital counseling sessions to each couple. In just a few meetings I provide clients with a succinct summary of concrete tools to keep their relationship in a positive space.

In addition, clients can fill out a detailed assessment and together we discuss their strengths and any area that they might want to keep an eye on moving forward. If there are any concerns about relationship dynamics or the wedding preparation, these meetings provide a forum to work them through in order to be ready for the big day.

Pre-marital counseling usually lasts between 3-5 sessions, depending on each couples needs and preferences.

Couples Therapy

I offer couples therapy to anyone defining themselves as a couple, married or not. I assist couples in crises of any kind, whether they are recovering from an affair, have issues communicating, feel unappreciated or lonely in the relationship, or find themselves constantly arguing, to name only a few.

I also work with couples who simply want to improve certain aspects of their relationship before having a child.

Gottman Approach for Couples

My work is based on the Gottman approach, a highly research-based way of helping couples. It is a down-to-earth model, in which couples are being taught concrete skills and techniques they can use outside of sessions. I was fully certified in the method many years ago.

In addition, I received training in Emotionally Focused Therapy and integrate EFT into my work with couples. EFT is another research-based approach to couples therapy, focused on attachment and strengthening the emotional bond between partners. These two schools of thought can be effectively combined, depending on each couple’s needs.

I have received additional training in helping clients with the transition to parenthood through The “Bringing Baby Home” of the Gottman Institute. The idea behind “Bringing Baby Home” is to help first-time parents navigate the often drastic changes in a partnership that often occur after a baby is born and to help them decrease conflict.

When couples therapy is not the right choice:

  1. Couples therapy is counter-indicated when there is a history of ongoing physical violence in the relationship.

  2. As long as one partner is involved in an affair and is not ready or willing to admit and give up the affair, I cannot provide couples therapy. In these cases I sometimes recommend individual treatment first.

  3. If one or both partners struggle with substance abuse, the abuse needs to be addressed in additional specialized treatment. Couples therapy will be offered once treatment for the substance abuse has started and has been consistent.

Marathon Sessions

If a couple wishes to focus on an issue in a more intense fashion or if there are logistical reason that make weekly sessions difficult, I offer marathon sessions.

Marathon sessions are several hours long and start with a thorough initial assessment.

Supervision

I offer supervision to already licensed therapists who would like to deepen their skills in individual and couples therapy. I believe that being able to mix therapeutic techniques and being flexible in one’s approach is of key importance in providing therapy. With that in mind, supervisees can draw from my experience in using a range of techniques.
